Understanding Sleep Apnoea: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder that affects the quality of one's sleep. It is characterised by pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while sleeping. Sleep apnoea leads to reduced oxygen flow to the brain and symptoms can include daytime drowsiness, insufficient sleep, decreased mood, reduced cognitive function, loud snoring, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, and morning headaches or migraines. In serious cases, sleep apnoea can lead to health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

If you suspect yourself or your partner of having sleep apnoea, you can visit your GP and ask about a referral for a full bulk-billed at-home sleep study by Cate’s Chemist, with a report from a Sleep Physician.

Cate’s Chemist Hyde Park also offers a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device trial with our ResMed machines. CPAP is not always the best solution for sleep apnoea, but if it is beneficial, we sell several models of ResMed machines that are useful for both bedside use and traveling. For more information, call Cate’s Chemist Hyde Park or contact your GP to discuss a referral.
