Medication Packing
Cate's Chemist can package your medication using Dose Administration Aids (DAA).
Are you:
- Taking more than two or three medications or supplements per day?
- Taking medication or supplements more than once a day?
- Confused by different doses with different instructions?
- A carer for someone taking medication?
Then ask your pharmacist about Dose Administration Aids (DAA). A pharmacist can advise whether a DAA might benefit the type of medicines you are taking, or the specific dose instructions.
DVA, CTG or Cate's Chemist Community Care patients might be able to get their DAA FREE!
You don't have to be elderly, have poor memory or many prescriptions to benefit from DAA. Small changes in dose can have disproportionate effects on the medicines we take. Forgetting a single dose, shifting a dose from a morning to evening, or taking it at another time of day with another medication are all things that can have consequences for your health. And remembering the specific instructions of one or two medicines can be challenging when we're distracted by other pressures in our lives.
DAA are:
- A visible reminder to take medication
- Easy to check to see whether medication has been taken or not
- Sealed and secure to prevent spills or mix ups
- Suitable for all age groups
- Checked and supervised by qualified pharmacists
- Convenient and portable
DAA set out all the tablets and capsules that need to be taken at each particular time of the day, for each day of the week. This makes it easy to manage medication. Your pharmacist takes the doctor's prescriptions and dispenses the medication into a blister pack. This pack is securely sealed so the medication is protected and there is no chance of error without noticing the pack has been damaged. The pack lists all the contents plus other medications taken, providing vital information for hospital or ambulance staff in the case of emergency. When it is time to take the medication, the person or carer pushes out the contents of the blister through the foil backing for the correct time on the correct day. DAA provides a visual cue, so you always know where you are up to.

Pharmacist Consultations
There are many ways you can access the expertise of a pharmacist at Cate's Chemist, including:
- Medication Counselling
- MedsCheck
- Diabetes MedsCheck
- Medication Profiling
- MedsIndex
- Medical Certificates
- Home Medicines Review
The pharmacist will normally counsel you on the use of a medicine when it is new, when dosage or other factors change, and periodically to ensure the medicine is still doing what you and your doctor expect it to. You can also ask your pharmacist anytime you have a query about your medicine and how it relates to other medications and supplements. The service is free in store, and over the phone if you are members of the Cate's Chemist Customer Care or Script Minder services.
MedsChecks and Diabetes MedsChecks
If you really want to capture a pharmacists time, ask about a MedsCheck or Diabetes MedsCheck. Managing multiple medications or diabetes is no easy task. With all the different instructions and potential side effects it's hard to know if the medications you take on a daily basis are working as well as they should. MedsCheck is a program that allows you to schedule a 20 to 30 minute one-to-one meeting with your pharmacist to ensure that you are safely and appropriately using all types of medication to maximise your health. Call in store or 07 4728 4261 to see if you qualify for the free service.
Medication Profiles
A Patient Medication Profile (PMP) is a comprehensive summary of all regular medicines taken by a patient. They assist patients to better understand and manage their medicines and provide an important communication tool for connecting patients and their health care professionals. The service is usually free if you are members of the Cate's Chemist Customer Care or Script Minder services.
MedsIndex
Research shows that even though people go to the doctor and are prescribed medicines to help their condition, many either don't take them at all or don't take them the way they need to in order to get the best effect. MedsIndex allows you to track how you are performing by calculating how much medicine the doctor intended you to take and comparing it to how much is being dispensed by your pharmacist. Call in store or 07 4728 4261 to see if you qualify for the free service.
Home Medicines Review
Home Medicines Review (HMR) are designed to assist individuals living at home to maximise the benefits of their medicine regimen and prevent medication related problems. A HMR Service is available to patient's whose General Practitioner (GP) determines that a HMR is clinically necessary to optimise the quality use of medicines and to address the patient's needs. It includes consideration of how home and lifestyle factors effect medication use, and is the next level of consultation up from a MedsCheck. Ask your pharmacist, or talk to your GP about whether they think a HMR will benefit you.
Residential Medication Management Review
A Residential Medication Management Review (RMMR) is a service provided to a permanent resident of an Australian Government funded aged care facility (ACF). This includes permanent residents of an Australian Government funded aged care facility (ACF) in flexible care arrangements (transitional care facilities). When requested by a resident's general practitioner (GP), an accredited pharmacist conducts an RMMR in collaboration with the GP and appropriate members of the eligible resident's healthcare team. Information about the resident's medicine is collated and a comprehensive assessment is undertaken to identify, resolve and prevent medication-related problems. A report of this assessment is provided to the resident's GP.
Medical Certificates
The introduction of WorkChoices in March 2006 broadened the types of health practitioners that could provide documentary evidence as proof of an employee's (or household member's) illness or injury. There are restrictions to the scope of medical certificates that can be issued, such as:
- only issued for minor ailments such as coughs, colds, flu, gastrointestinal conditions, and other common infectious diseases.
- normally only issued for a maximum of two days.
- cannot be issued for a condition where the patient is being treated with a prescription drug.
- any condition that is complicated must be referred to a doctor.
- a pharmacist is not able to issue a certification that a person is fit to return to work.
Expect a 10 to 15 minute consultation. Call 07 4728 4261 to make an appointment and confirm the fee.
Blood Pressure Monitoring
Are you:
- Middle aged and never been checked? or
- From a family with a history of high blood pressure? or
- Overweight? or
- Not physically active? or
- Smoking or drinking alcohol regularly? or
- Stressed? or
- Diagnosed with a chronic condition that puts you at risk?
Then ask your pharmacist about blood pressure monitoring. Phone 07 4728 4261.
The higher your blood pressure, the harder your heart has to work. Higher than normal blood pressure is called hypertension. It is a key risk factor for both heart disease and stroke.
The only reliable way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have a regular check-up. There are no other obvious signs or symptoms.
The good news regarding high blood pressure is that it can usually be controlled with lifestyle changes and/or medication if required.
Cate's Chemist offers a blood pressure monitoring service for $3 per consultation. Your blood pressure is measured using a reliable electronic blood pressure meter. The pharmacist will record and evaluate you blood pressure measurements on several occasions to confirm the reading and if necessary, refer you to your Doctor.
Cate's Chemist also has Home Blood Pressure Monitors available to purchase, should you prefer to measure your blood pressure at home.
Cate's Chemist Script Minder Service
Now with SMS reminder and App support!
Ever misplaced a prescription? Turned up at a pharmacy that doesn't have your medication in stock? Found one prescription, but not sure whether there is a more current one?
We can care for your prescriptions so you can turn your mind to other things.
Call in store or register online for our free Script Minding service:
- We hold onto your scripts.
- You call ahead and we have your medications ready for collection when you arrive, or
- You register for MedAdvisor for app based messaging or SMS reminders that let you know when you are due for a script repeat, when you have run out of repeats and need to see your doctor, and when the script has been filled and is ready for pickup.
Holding your scripts helps us:
- Give you quality, continuous care.
- Support you better with reminders and advice.
- Manage stock of your medications.
An American study of how well people comply with their doctors' instructions when taking their medicines found that for every one hundred prescriptions written, only 88 are filled. That means at least 12 patients did not even get the first prescription filled. Only 15 to 20 of those 100 people actually took the medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor, including all repeats.
