Affordable Medicines Now: PBS Co-Payment Drops to $25
At Cate’s Chemist, we believe that access to essential medicines should never be a financial burden. That’s why we’re pleased to share some very good news for our community.
From 1 January 2026, Australians will pay no more than $25.00 per prescription for medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). This is the lowest PBS co-payment since 2004 and a meaningful step in easing cost-of-living pressures for individuals and families.
Why this matters
Independent research shows that one in five Australians have delayed or skipped filling a prescription in the past three years because of cost. In regional areas, that figure rises to one in three.
No one should have to choose between their health and essentials like food, rent, or electricity. These changes mean more Australians can take their medicines as prescribed, stay healthier, and avoid preventable complications.
A win for patients and communities
This reform was made possible through strong collaboration across the health and community sector, with more than 20 organisations working together to advocate for affordable medicines.
Community pharmacies play a vital role in making healthcare accessible, especially in local and regional communities. At Cate’s Chemist, we see first-hand how medicine affordability directly impacts patient wellbeing—and we welcome changes that put patients first.
