Department of Health Clinical Care Alert: Benzathine Benzylpenicillin (Bicillin LA) Shortage

The Queensland Department of Health has requested we distribute this factsheet to clinicians in the region.
The shortage is due to disruption at the point of manufacturing. The shortage is expected to last for several months. Central Pharmacy has limited stock, is sourcing additional supplies and is currently rationing stock. This factsheet is for use during a period of shortage only. If adequate stock of benzathine benzylpenicillin is assured, return to using it in line with relevant local and national guidelines.

 Queensland Health clinician letter: acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis

Queensland Health has requested we distribute this letter to clinicians in the region.
Acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) is now listed under Schedule 1 (notifiable conditions) of the Public Health Regulation 2018, effective 20 October 2023.
APSGN is notifiable on the basis of clinical evidence including clinical history and signs and symptoms.

Queensland Health General Communique: increasing pertussis notifications in Queensland

Queensland Health has requested we distribute this Communicable Diseases Branch General Communique to clinicians in the region.
We are currently experiencing an increase in notifications of pertussis across Queensland. Despite routine pertussis vaccination on the National Immunisation Program (NIP), pertussis is still common in Australia with outbreaks experienced every few years.
